Every night
I laid in my bed
And heard the screaming.
I clung to my blankets
Trying to drown out the noise,
All the while knowing,
The voices would linger
Long after the yelling stopped.
My brother and I learned to leave
Before it got out of control.
But leaving meant I had to return.
There was no end and
No escape.
I prayed the message
That hung on our door,
Reading "Peace to all who enter here."
I don't think He heard me
Above the torrid shouts below.
Finally she was gone,
And my body sighed in false relief,
For the hell still continued.
Only now I heard one side of it.
The nightly calls
Set me on nightly runs
For things we didn't need,
With money we couldn't spend.
One glorious night, the
Screaming, and the
Shouting, and the
Hitting, and the
Crying all
Stopped.
And finally,
I knew something was wrong.
